ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair

How many of these chairs do I have now? I can't count, but probably 5, or maybe 6. Either way it's a handful. I tend to only bring these out when I'm going to be somewhere for awhile...like car camping or an evening outside doing some BBQ on the grill. In fact, when my wife and I moved over the summer, I sure did hold back a couple of these and used them as our living room furniture while we were in our temporary apartment. We're not huge people, nor are the kids, but there are a lot of reasons why you should just spring for the big camping chairs over the smaller guys...and I'll get to those reasons later.

I'm a big fan of ALPS Mountaineering products, generally speaking I think the company does a great job at making products that can stand up to abuse. I've written about their 6 person tent, and have linked to their lightweight camping cot and their large camping cot from my camping cot guide. All three are solid, and now we're on to their King Kong Chair. It's made out of a powder coated steel frame, so it's not light at 13 pounds. However, it'll hold 800 pounds of weight and has two beverage holders (one per arm), as well as pockets in the same fashion. The chair is made of 600D Polyester, which is the same as many camping cots, and you'll sit 18 inches off the ground. We have a long legged family, so this really is almost essential for us. It does come with a carrying bag, which I have found to be essential....I mean...it's a big chair.

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair

Overall this is a big and solid chair and you won't have to worry about the damn thing collapsing like you might with other lesser-built chairs. It's easy to unfold and pack up and you'll also notice the chair is a little bit no nonsense in that you don't see any ridiculous logos or anything. One thing I would mention is that this chair is much more comfortable with your feet elevated on a cooler. If you have shorter legs, the front bar will not make your sitting experience super comfortable over time. Unless you're treating this chair like a rented mule, it should last pretty much a lifetime. I've had mine for a few years now and they look almost brand new. In fact I would say the canvas looks like it's never been used aside from a few mustard stains!
