ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 6 Person Tent

Part of camping is having a good tent. I've been the proud owner of this ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 6 person tent for about 5 years and it has served me well in a variety of environments. Made out of some good quality nylon, it has stood up to some good abuse by men in their 30's as well as a few dogs. It's tall enough that you don't feel too claustrophobic and if you're under 6 feet tall, you can stand up straight in it. The tent uses a pretty standard two-pole cross design that seems like any other tent this size (10 ft x 10 ft).

Ventilation is more than adequate and the ALPS folks put two windows, one on each door, and there are two side mesh panels as well. Also included with the tent is a nice rain fly with an additional pole so you have an awning over each door opening. Even with the good construction of the floor seams, you'll want to use a tarp under it to limit any moisture penetration should you be out in some rain --I've found this to be a great standard practice even if there is no rain in the forecast.

Even though this tent is rated at 6 persons, I have put no more than 4 full size, grown adults in the tent. 4 adults is snug, for sure, but on really cold nights it's actually nice to have some more warmth in the tent. I've had this tent in below freezing temperatures (could be warmer!), high wind and rain, as well as hot and humid summer nights and I have not been disappointed with it once. Sure, it's not the best thing on the market, but for the money, I'd have a hard time picking another tent over this one. If you're looking for an affordable family tent, look no further.
